Activision has produced seven titles in the wildly successful Call of Duty franchise. In 2009, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was released, which earned $550 million in the first five days of sales. However, controversy followed as Activision fired the heads of Infinity Ward, denied their bonuses and gave the next game development to Treyarch, who had created CoD: World at War game. CoD: Black Ops hit the shelves in late 2010 and in less than 24 hours sold seven million copies. The game focused on the Cold War era and brought gamers to a whole new level. call of duty black ops multiplayer especially introduced a new twist on an idea that was fast becoming commonplace.
First-person shooters games have offered a standard multiplayer option, from Doom to GoldenEye to Halo. Online games, played through Xbox Live, pit gamers against each other as either individuals or as teams. Unlike previous multiplayer arenas, this one requires participants to unlock difficulty levels, such as hardcore mode. Other levels of difficulty are available to test gamers’ skills, such as Core, Bare Bones and Prestige. Players unlock these as they progress and gain experience points.
Of course, no first-person shooter game would be complete without a stunning array of weaponry and call of duty black ops multiplayer is no exception. Weapons like the MP5, G11, ASP .45 or Makarov are all at a player’s disposal, and by doing well in matches players can access more weapons. The famous AK-47, almost synonymous with the Soviet Union can be pitted against the NATO-issued FN FAL, right arm of the free world. Both provide an excellent tool for gamers’ abilities, and eventually players can create their own packs, made up of weapons and equipment.
Other new additions featured are the theater area, where players can create and view movies that they create or films of games they have played. With this asset, players can review their gameplay, learn from their mistakes and improve, as well as gain insight of enemy tactics. This latest installment from Activision is a perfect game for playing with old friends and new, and guarantees an exciting game night.
